NOvA Near Detector Hall-Tunnels and Hall

Project Description

Fermilab is America’s premier particle physics laboratory.  Scientists at the facility collaborate with those around the work to perform pioneering research, operate world-leading particle accelerators and experiments, and develop technologies for science in support of U.S. industry. The work for this project consisted of site preparation, existing utility relocation, underground excavation and support of excavation, and outfitting to house a new high-energy physics experiment.  The project was comprised of construction of a cavern and two access tunnels.

GSG’s scope of services consisted of providing environmental monitoring for the project including respirable dust and silica for worker protection pursuant to OSHA requirements and water discharge monitoring pursuant to EPA Clean Water Act requirements.  We performed several air monitoring events to assess the effectiveness of bulkheads installed to prevent dust from leaving the work area and affecting areas with ongoing scientific experiments and to monitor worker exposure to construction related airborne contaminants.  GSG also conducted periodic monitoring of the treated construction water to maintain pH and TSS levels within the limits established in the IEPA Water Pollution Control Permit for this project
